Fly High with These 5 Hiring Tips for Entrepreneurs
Growth happens outside of your comfort zone. To grow your small business, you're going to need help. And hiring team members to build your current or future kick-ass team can feel overwhelming.
Not to mention, 46% of new employees don't make it to the 18-month mark. That's even more reason to ensure you hire the right people for the job from the get-go.
Whether you're hiring a full-time employee, independent contractor, or freelancer, it's important to be clear on the type of collaborative experience you're looking for.
Here are five hiring tips to help your business soar and reach greater heights with new hires.
1. Map Out Your Hiring Needs
"No! I think it's a great idea to interview four people before deciding what your real hiring requirements are."
.... Said no recruiter, ever. - Source unknown
It's easy to find potential hires and jump into the interview stage before you should. Truth is, when you don't do your due diligence and map out your hiring needs, it'll come back to bite you in the butt.
Map out your hiring needs by listing the tasks and projects you need help with and the skills required for each.
Are you looking for a content writer, website designer, etc.? Be as specific as possible.

2. Write A Creative and Detailed Job Posting
When advertising your job opening, I strongly recommend you write a creative job posting.
Done with boring old job postings out there!
Show your personality. That way, you draw in people who resonate with your vibe — a recipe for a great work environment, whether that's in-person, virtual, or half-and-half.
Additionally, do your best to tie in your hiring needs by listing and describing the specific tasks and responsibilities which are unique to your business.
3. Hold Down-To-Earth, Engaging Interviews
The best interviews I’ve had are the ones where it feels like a conversation with a buddy.
Set the tone by keeping these four interview tips in mind:
● Don’t be so formal.
● Shoot the sh*t with your candidates.
● Get to know THEM!
● See if there’s a good flow of conversation.
Yes, have questions ready!
Always ask questions with a purpose in mind. You might ask something to break the ice, or to test a candidate's ability to think on their feet.
Questions can also reveal personal or professional interests and help in the getting-to-know part of your interview.
Make sure you incorporate your core values into some of your hiring questions.
Finally, avoid asking the same boring interview questions too, i.e., "Where do you see yourself in five years?" — WHO can answer THAT one? UGH! (lol).
4. Choose Passionate New Hires
Passion makes profit!
Ok, I've never heard that one, but it sure rings true in my experience of hiring!
When selecting a new hire, it's crucial that the people you bring on board are passionate about what they do and excited about growth.
A high level of passion should trump years of experience every time if you want to tap into the benefits of creativity, persistence, and quality work in your new hires.
Once you've done that, you can use my practical tips to draw out rewarding leadership traits in your team members.
5. Be Mindful of Cultural Fit
If you want a positive culture within your team and for your business, hiring someone who leans the opposite way won't enhance that. It'll turn the atmosphere around.
Furthermore, the people you hire may eventually mentor your future team members. So be sure to first, know how your work culture is oriented, and second, hire people who will represent and propagate it within your kick-ass team!
Create Your Hiring Plan
After growing the Ripple Effect Leadership team, I structured out a super easy-to-follow hiring plan which you can use for your own team-building goals.
Use it at any stage — hiring ideation and consideration, hiring planning, or even the desperate-to-hire stage!
